HOLLAND, MI – Fire crews are battling a scrap metal fire at a recycling center near downtown Holland.

Holland firefighters were dispatched to a fire at the Louis Padnos Iron & Metal Co., on Pine Avenue and 7th Street in Holland, at 12:24 p.m. Saturday, June 3, officials told MLive/The Grand Rapids Press.

Crews were still battling the scrap metal fire at 2 p.m., according to the Holland Department of Public Safety. It is unclear at this time how the fire started.

"Firefighters advised they will likely be out here working this fire for several hours," the department posted on its Facebook page.

Nearby residents who live around Lake Macatawa have been advised to stay indoors and close their windows and doors, because wind has spread the smoke from the fire around the area, the public safety department said.

A portion of Pine Avenue, starting at 4th Street, was closed to traffic Saturday afternoon as crews worked to battle the fire.

Motorists are being asked to avoid the area and to seek alternate routes if they needed to come into the city, according to the Facebook post.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.
